An Optimized UAV-Based System for Intelligent, Safe, and Cost-Effective Coconut Harvesting

Abstract

Coconut harvesting is a demanding process that requires skilled laborers to ascend trees, which can cause injuries and even death. This paper introduces an innovative solution that uses an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a camera and an image processing module driven by machine learning algorithms, along with laser technology, a mechanical arm, or a combination of both. The UAV is capable of detecting coconuts through its camera, assessing their ripeness through image analysis, and employing laser technology or a mechanical arm to accurately harvest mature coconuts. Compared to traditional manual harvesting methods and current robotic systems, this UAV-based solution presents a more efficient, safer, and cost-effective alternative. It has the potential to improve the harvesting efficiency by as much as 50%. The article delves into the design and development of the system, its benefits, and the challenges that it faces, highlighting improvements in safety, cost optimization, and productivity enhancement.
