Bioethics Legal Implications of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

Abstract

Issues such as informed consent, privacy, bias, autonomy, transparency, and justice are no longer confined to human clinicians or biological experiments, but are now integral to the design and deployment of AI in medical and life sciences contexts. Law, in turn, plays a crucial mediating liability when harm occurs, and upholding rights that might otherwise be infringed by opaque or unregulated AI systems. Artificial intelligence encompasses a broad array of techniques-ranging from simple rule-based systems to deep learning networks capable of simulating aspects of human cognition. These systems are increasingly deployed in bioethical contexts such as predictive diagnostics, robotic surgery, mental health assessment, genetic analysis, and elder care. For instance, AI can detect early signs of disease in radiological scans, identify genetic predispositions to illness, or manage patient records to flag potential drug interactions. While these applications promise to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and access in healthcare, they also raise profound bioethical concerns.
